California Workplace “Know Your Rights” Notice (SB 294): What This Law Means for Employees

January 29, 2026 | Employment Law

California law strongly protects employees, and Senate Bill 294 (SB 294) reinforces

those protections by making sure workers clearly understand their rights. The purpose

of this law is simple but powerful: employees deserve to know when their workplace

rights are being violated and how to take action.

Under SB 294, employees must be informed of their rights under California’s anti-

discrimination and anti-harassment laws. This includes the right to work in an

environment free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. Protected

characteristics include, but are not limited to, race, gender, age, disability, sexual

orientation, religion, national origin, and gender identity or expression.

The “Know Your Rights” notice also explains what employees can do if they experience

unlawful treatment at work. Employees have the right to report discrimination or

harassment, file a complaint with the California Civil Rights Department, and participate

in an investigation without fear of punishment or retaliation from their employer.

Importantly, the law ensures that this information is clearly displayed and accessible,

helping workers recognize misconduct sooner rather than later.

For many employees, workplace mistreatment goes unreported simply because they

are unsure of their legal options. SB 294 helps remove that uncertainty by putting vital

information directly in employees’ hands. When workers understand their rights, they

are better equipped to protect themselves, speak up, and seek accountability.

If you believe your workplace rights have been violated, you do not have to navigate the

situation alone. Lavi & Ebrahimian represents employees in Beverly Hills and

throughout California who have experienced discrimination, harassment, or retaliation at
