As of January 1, 2024, California law requires employers to provide a minimum of 40 hours (5
days) of paid sick leave per year to their employees. This expansion from the previous 24 hours
aims to support workers’ health and well-being.
Employees can accrue sick leave at a rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, or employers
may choose to front-load the 40 hours at the beginning of each year. Unused sick leave can carry
over to the next year, but employers may limit the carryover to 80 hours.
This change ensures that employees have adequate time to recover from illness without the
added stress of lost income. It’s important for employees to understand their rights and for
employers to update their policies to comply with the new law.
